Lucid Life - Marama Ora

Christopher Bellamy

2024

Lucid Life (Marama Ora) is a project that explores how biological processes can be integrated into design to create materials that are not static but alive and responsive. At the core of the project is a living material containing bioluminescent microalgae capable of producing light when stimulated by touch or movement, echoing natural symbiotic systems found in marine ecosystems.

Combining scientific research, biotechnology, and traditional Polynesian craftsmanship, Lucid Life proposes a design approach that works with biological life rather than extracting from it. Through a series of experimental objects, including wearable pieces and performative artifacts, the project demonstrates how living materials can become part of everyday experiences. By bringing together contemporary design practices and indigenous knowledge systems, Lucid Life invites reflection on more regenerative and symbiotic futures, where design becomes a mediator between culture, technology, and the living world.
